In Roman times Tarraco had two aqueducts running into the city. The first took water from the River Gaià near Pont d’Armentera, while the second led from the River Francolí. There was possibly a third aqueduct, although we have very little information on it and we do not know if it was an independent conduit or a bifurcation of the Francolí aqueduct.
The purpose of these conduits was to bring water to the distribution tanks (castella aquae) located around the city. They took advantage of the natural slope of the land, although in places it was necessary to build aqueducts.
